Losing a child must be the most painful thing in the world, Son of God or not.
That story always gets forgotten.
This haunting picture is a painting called Pieta by William Adolphe Bouguereau. To me, it is an extraordinary piece of work.
The image is sad on so many levels. Cradling her dead child in her arms, pure grief in her eyes, she is crushed to her core.
No wailing or screaming. She knew this day was coming.
The crown of thorns discarded by their feet signifying the end of his physical suffering and the accumulation of hers.
She physically holds onto him, his body – that is the only part of him that she has left.
Pieta - William Adolphe Bouguereau
